“Òṣì ló njẹ tani mọ̀ ẹ́ ri, owó ló njẹ mo bá ẹ tan” – “Poverty is lonesome while success has many siblings”

Ni ayé igbà kan, bi èniyàn bá jẹ́ alágbára, ti ó tẹpá-mọ́ṣẹ́, ti ó si tún ni iwà ọmọlúwàbí, iyi wà fun bi kò ti ẹ ni owó, ju olówó rẹpẹtẹ ti kò si ẹni ti ó mọ idi owó rẹ ni áwùjọ tàbi ti kò hùwà ọmọlúwàbí. Ni ayé òde òni, ọ̀wọ̀ wà fún olówó lai mọ idi ọrọ̀, eyi ló njẹ ki irú àwọn bẹ́ ẹ̀ dé ipò Òsèlú, Olóri Ìjọ tàbi gba oyè ti kò tọ́ si wọn.

Ìbẹ̀rù òṣì lè jẹ́ ki èniyàn tẹpá-mọ́ṣẹ́, bẹ ló tún lè jẹ́ ki ọ̀pọ̀ fi ipá wá owó. Ìfẹ́ owó tó gba òde kan láyé òde òni njẹ ki ọ̀pọ̀lọpọ̀ jalè tàbi wá ipò agbára ti ó lè mú ki wọn ni owó ni ọ̀nà ti kò tọ́. Òṣèlú ki fẹ́ gbé ipò silẹ̀ nitori ìbẹ̀rù pé bi agbára bá ti bọ́, ìṣẹ́ dé. Àpẹrẹ tani mọ̀ ẹ́ ri pọ̀ lára àwọn Òsèlú ti agbára bọ́ lọ́wọ́ rẹ, Ọ̀gá Òṣìṣẹ́ Ìjọba ti ipò rẹ bọ́, Olóri Ìjọ ti ó kó ọrọ̀ jọ ni orúkọ Ọlọrun ló nri idá mẹwa gbà ju Olóri Ìjọ ti kò ni owó.

Òwe Yorùbá ti ó sọ wi pé “Òṣì ló njẹ tani mọ̀ ẹ́ ri, owó ló njẹ mo bá ẹ tan” fi hàn pé owó dára lati ni, ṣùgbọ́n kò dára lati fi ipá wá ni ọ̀nà ẹ̀bùrú. Kò yẹ ki èniyàn fi ojú pa ẹni ti kò ni rẹ́ tàbi sá fún ẹbi ti kò ni, nitori igbà layé, igb̀a kan nlọ, igbà kan mbọ̀, ẹni ti ó ni owó loni lè di òtòṣì ni ọ̀la, ẹni ti kò ni loni lè ni a ni ṣẹ́ kù bi ó di ọ̀la. Nitori eyi, iwà ló yẹ ká bọ̀wọ̀ fún ki i ṣe owó tàbi ipò.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

In time past, if a person is strong, hard working with good moral character, such person is honoured even though he/she may not be rich rather than a very rich person whose source of wealth is unknown/questionable and has no moral character in the Society. Nowadays, there is respect for the rich without knowing the source of such wealth, this has made such people attain undeserved Political position, Church Leadership or Chieftaincy.

Fear of poverty can lead one to work harder, also it can cause one to be desperate to acquire wealth by all means. Love of money that is prevalent in recent times has led many to steal or seek for position of authority that can be used to embezzle. Politicians never liked stepping down for fear of poverty that could come upon them once they lose such status. Examples of lonesomeness is prevalent among Politicians who lost in election, senior Public Office holders that lost a job and Church Leaders that have acquired so much wealth in the name of God receive more tithes than the poor Church Leaders.

The Yoruba Proverb that said “Poverty is lonesome while success has many siblings”, showed that it is good to be rich but it is bad to acquire wealth through crooked means. It is not good to underrate or abandon someone or family member who is perceived to be poor, because everything has a time and season, someone may be rich today but poor tomorrow, whereas the poor today may have excess tomorrow. As a result, people with good moral character should earn their respect rather than respecting riches or position of authority.
