ENGLISH TRANSLATION
It is common among the political parties in Nigeria, for few political big wigs to select who to present for political positions on behalf of the parties. It has become the norm in Lagos State for the Governors to spend two terms of eight years. At the beginning of the fourth Republic in Nigeria, nineteen years ago, Bola Tinubu was elected as the first Governor of Lagos State. Lagos State citizens love Bola Tinubu and are very proud of him in all the parties he had associated with, hence whoever he supports for nomination is often fully backed by the party members.
On completion of former Gov. Bola Tinubu’s eight years tenure, he was part of the party big wigs that selected his successor Gov. Babatunde Raji Fashola who also spent two terms, for continuity of his legacy in Lagos State. Three years ago, as a political Godfather, Bola Tinubu anointed Akinwunmi Ambode which gave him an edge over the other candidates to emerge as the current Governor and this has caused disaffection against Bola Tinubu by some party members and those who felt there was no level playing field.
Governorship or other political position is not like the traditional chieftaincy that is for a lifetime. Under the political dispensation, election into various political positions takes place every four years. The All Progressive Congress (APC) are dumping the practice of Godfathers anointing their choice as the party’s political nominees and are adopting open/direct primary in which all party members are given the right to vote at the primary election to elect candidates that will compete with other parties in the general election. This is the best for democracy.
All Progressive Congress (APC) are preparing for their convention, where all card carrying members will be able to vote to elect nominees among the various interested candidates who will then compete with other parties in the general election. Since former Gov. Bola Tinubu announced support for direct primary, the news has been agog with the speculation that he has dumped his political Godson Gov Ambode and has anointed Jide Sanwoolu to take over from Ambode after four years or first term. As a result of Gov. Ambode’s great performance as witnessed by Lagos State citizens, he need not fear or lose sleep over competing. APC members who have indicated interest at competing with Gov. Ambode at the next convention are Jide Sanwoolu and Obafemi Hamzat.
