Ìjọba-àpapọ̀ sọ Èkó di ìpínlẹ̀ ni àádọ́ta ọdún sẹhin.  Èkó jẹ́ olú ilú fún gbogbo orilẹ̀ èdè Nigeria tẹ́lẹ̀ ki wọn tó gbe lọ si Abuja.  Ìpínlẹ̀ Èkó jẹ ikan ninú ipinle mẹ́fà Yorùbá.

Yorùbá ni “Èkó gba olè, ó gba ọlẹ”, ọ̀rọ̀ yi jẹ wi pé kò si irú ẹni ti ko si ni ìpínlẹ̀ Èkó nitori Èkó gba olówó, ó si gba aláini àti wi pé iṣẹ́ pọ̀ ni Èkó ju gbogbo ìpínlẹ̀ yoku lo.  Kò si ẹ̀yà tàbi ẹ̀sìn Nigeria ti kò si ni Èkó.  Nitori èyi èrò pọ̀ jù ilẹ̀ lọ nitori omi ló yi Èkó ká.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

The Federal Government of Nigeria created Lagos State fifty years ago.  Lagos was the former capital of Nigeria before the capital was moved to Abuja.  Lagos is one of the six Yoruba States.

According to Yoruba adage “Lagos accommodates both the thieves and the lazy”, meaning rich or poor, anyone can live in Lagos as there are no ethnic group that is not represented in the State and also there are more job opportunity in Lagos than other States of the country.

These are the list of Governors in Lagos since her creation fifty years ago:

First Governor – Brigadier Mobolaji Johnson – 1967 to 1975
Second Governor – Commodore Adekunle Lawal – 1975 to 1977
Third Governor – Commodore Ndubuisi Kanu – 1977 to 1978
Fourth Governor – Commodore Ebitu Ukewe – 1978 to 1979
Fifth Governor – Aihaji Lateef Jakande – 1979 to 1983
Sixth Governor – Air Commodore Gbolahan Mudasiru – 1984 to 1983
Seventh Governor – Navy Captain Mike Akhigbe – 1986 to 1988
Eighth Governor – Brigadier-General Raji Rasaki – 1988 to 1992
Ninth Governor – Sir Michael Otedola – 1992 to 1993
Tenth Governor – Colonel Olagunsoye Oyinlola – 1993 to 1996
Eleventh Governor – Colonel Mohammed Buba Marwa – 1996 to 1999
Twelfth Governor – Mr. Bola Ahmed Tinubu – 1999 to 2007

Apart from the Military rule, Lagos has enjoyed stable transition of power in the past seventeen years, especially during the current Democratic or Civilian Government dispensation.  This has made Lagos State recorded greater progress more than other States in Nigeria.
