“Ikú tó fẹ́ pani, bó bá sini ni fìlà, ọpẹ́ ló yẹ ká dá”: Idibò yan Òṣèlú ọdún Ẹgbãlemẹ̃dógún – “Escaping death by the whisker calls for gratitude”: Election of Twenty-fifteen

Ni igbà ipalẹ̀mọ́ idibò, ẹ̀rù ba ará ilú nitori wọn kò mọ ohun ti ó lè sẹlẹ̀. Àwọn ti ó ndu ipò jade ni rẹpẹtẹ fún ètò-òṣèlú, eyi ti ó fa ki àwọn jàndùkú bẹ̀rẹ̀ ijà ti ó fa sún-kẹrẹ fà-kẹrẹ ọkọ̀ pàtàki ni ilú Èkó, eleyi fa ibẹ̀rù pé ọjọ́ idibò yio burú.

Yorùbá ni “Ọ̀rọ̀ ki i mi ni ikùn àgbà” ṣùgbọ́n, ọ̀rọ̀ mi ni ikùn Ọba Èkó, Ọba Rilwanu Akiolu nigbati ó ṣe ipàdé pẹ̀lú àwọn àgbà Ìgbò Èkó, pé ti wọn kò bá dibò fún ẹni ti ohun fẹ, wọn yio bá òkun lọ. Ọ̀rọ̀ Ọba Rilwanu Akiolu bi ará ilé àti oko ninú. Eleyi tún dá kún ibẹ̀rù pé ija yio bẹ́ ni ọjọ́ idibò, nitori eyi ọpọlọpọ ará ilú ko jade lati dibò.

Gbogbo àgbáyé ló mọ̀ wi pé àwọn Òṣèlú ilẹ̀ Aláwọ̀-dúdú ki i fẹ gbé Ìjọba silẹ. Ki ṣe pe wọn ni ifẹ́ ilu,́ bi kò ṣe pé, ó gbà wọn láyè lati lo ipò wọn lati ji owó ilú fún ara àti ẹbi wọn. Gẹ́gẹ́ bi ọ̀rọ̀ Yorùbá pe “Ikú tó fẹ́ pani, bó bá sini ni fìlà, ọpẹ́ ló yẹ ká dá”, ikú tó fẹ́ pa ará ilú ti re kọja nitori ọjọ́ idibò lati yan Gómìnà àti Aṣòfin-ipinlẹ̀ ti lọ lai mú ogun dáni bi ará ilú ti rò. Ẹ ṣe àyẹ̀wò èsi idibò:

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

: Ìpínlẹ̀ Èkó – Ọ̀gbẹ́ni Akinwunmi Ambọde ti Ẹgbẹ́ Onigbalẹ ló wọlé. Lagos State – Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode of the All Progressive Congress (APC) won the election

: Ìpínlẹ̀ Ògùn – Aṣòfin-àgbà, Gómìnà Ibikunle Amósùn ti Ẹgbẹ́ Onigbalẹ ló wọlé ni igbà keji. Ogun State – Governor (Senator) Ibikunle Amosun of the All Progressive Congress (APC) re-elected.

: Ìpínlẹ̀ Ọ̀yọ́ – Gómìnà Abiọlá Ajimọbi ti Ẹgbẹ́ Onigbalẹ ló wọlé ni igbà keji. Oyo State – Governor Abiola Ajimobi of the All Progressive Congress (APC) re-elected.

: Ìpínlẹ̀ Ọ̀ṣun – Kò si idibò yan Gómìnà nitori ọjọ́ kẹsan oṣ̀u kẹjọ ọdún Ẹgbãlemẹrinla ni Ọ̀gbẹ́ni Rauf Arẹ́gbẹ́ṣọlá ti Ẹgbẹ́ Onigbalẹ ló wọlé ni igbà keji. Osun State – No Governorship election because on tenth of August, twenty-fifteen, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola was re-elected under the All Progressive Congress (APC).

: Ìpínlẹ̀ Èkìtì – Kò si idibò yan Gómìnà nitori ọjọ́ kọkanlélógún oṣù kẹfa ọdún Egbalemerinla ni wọn yan Ogbeni Ayọdele Fayoṣe ti Ẹgbẹ Alágboòrùn wọlé. Ekiti State – No Governorship election because on the eleventh of June, Twenty-fourteen, Mr. Ayodele Fayose was re-elected under the People’s Democratic Party

: Ìpínlẹ̀ Ondo – Kò si idibò yan Gómìnà nitori ọdún mẹrin Gómìnà Oniṣègùn Olúṣẹ́gun Mimiko ko ti pe. Wọn dibò gbe wọlé padà ni abẹ́ Ẹgbẹ́ Òṣiṣẹ́ ni ọjọ́ kọkanlelogun, oṣù kẹwa ọdún Ẹgbãlemejila. Ondo State – No Governorship election because Governor (Dr) Olusegun Mimiko has not completed his second four year term. He was re-elected under the Labour Party on the eleventh of October, Twenty-twelve.

During preparation for election, people were afraid because they were not sure of the aftermath of the election. Those vying for position came out massively to campaign, this led to the various political thugs’ clash that caused heavy vehicular traffic particularly in Lagos, people were apprehensive of the election.

According to Yoruba adage translated thus “Elders have more capacity to stomach unpleasant words” but this was not the case with the King of Lagos Rilwan Akiolu, when he held a meeting with the Lagos Igbo Leaders. He warned that if they refuse to back the candidate he supported they would perish in the Lagoon. This made Nigerians home and abroad angry and it contributed to the fear of worse electoral violence hence the low turnout of voters.

African politicians are known all over the world for their love of clinging to power. Not because they love the people but because it affords them the opportunity to loot the treasury for themselves and their family. According to another Yoruba adage, “Escaping death by the whisker calls for gratitude”, this is apt as the Governorship and State Legislative election has been relatively peaceful contrary to people’s expectation of war.
