Trudy Alli-Balogun jailed for 5 years over £2.4 million housing fraud
Ni Ilú-Ọba, ẹ̀tọ́ ará ilú ni ki Ìjọba pèsè ohun amáyédẹrùn, pàtàki ibùgbé fún ọmọ ilú, ilé-ìwòsàn ọ̀fẹ́ fún ọmọ àti ará ilú. ENGLISH TRANSLATION
The relationship between the Yoruba people with the United Kingdom dated over two hundred years as a result of trans-Atlantic trade, slave trade and coming to acquire higher education.
In the United Kingdom, it is the right of the citizens and residents to be provided with modern infrastructure such as public housing and free health care. However, visitors, illegal immigrant, non-permanent residents are not entitled to any benefit. Those with work permit are not entitled to public housing but are entitled to free health care. As published in the Evening Standard of Thursday, May 5, 2016, Trudy Alli-Balogun used her position as Southwark Council Housing Officer in London to defraud the Council to the tune of £2.4 million by allocating Council houses to her Yoruba cronies who are not entitled, hence has been jailed for five years.
The news making the round in the papers and on line revealed how the Political Leaders, Senators, Members of House of Assembly, Heads of Government Offices and those in high position of authority has used their position of authority to defraud Nigeria over time. The change of Government that ushered in President Muhammadu Buhari/Yemi Osinbajo that declared a war on corruption, led to the revelation how Nigerian leaders has used their position to amass public fund to themselves.
According to Yoruba proverb “The character cultivated at home often reflect in the public”. In time past, Yoruba people often inquire about the source of people’s wealth unlike nowadays, when people are worshipping those who acquired wealth through fraudulent means or have just returned from prison. The recent change of Government in Nigeria that ushered in President Muhammadu Buhari/Yemi Osinbajo and their stance on corruption has exposed how people in position of authority in Nigeria have enriched themselves through corrupt means at the expense of provision of infrastructure. Corruption has no other name and should be condemned as thieves has brought upon themselves shame.
