Ilé-ìkàwé MTN – MTN to withdraw multi-million digital library donated to UNILAG
Ilé-ìkàwé gẹ́gẹ́ bi orúkọ yi ti jẹ ni èdè Yorùbá, jẹ ibi ti wọn kó oriṣiriṣi iwé si, fún ọmọ ilé-iwé àti èrò lati wọlé yá iwé fún ki kà. Ilẹ̀ Aláwọ̀dúdú ni Ilé-ìkàwé ti bẹ̀rẹ̀ ni Alexandria, Egypt. Ni ayé òde òni, ki ṣe iwé nikan ni wọn nkó si Ilé-ìkàwé, wọn a tún pèsè ẹ̀rọ ayélujára fún ẹni ti ó bá fẹ́ ka iwé lóri ayélujára àti lati wá idi ohun ti ó nlọ ni àgbáyé.
Ilé́-iwé kò pé lai si Ilé-ìkàwé. Ki ṣe ilé-iwé nikan ló ni Ilé-ìkàwé, nitori àdúgbò, agbègbè àti ilú na a ma nni Ilé-ìkàwé fún ọmọ ilé-iwé àti èrò ti ó ni ìfẹ́ lati ni ìmọ̀. Lati igbà ti Ìjọba-àpapọ̀ ti gba gbogbo ilé-iwé lọ́wọ́ àwọn Olùdásílẹ̀, ni ilé-iwé ti bàjẹ́ pàtàki àwọn ilé-iwé ti Ìjọba gba.
Yorùbá fẹ́ràn ẹni ti ó bá kàwé, ṣùgbọ́n ni ayé òde òni, ìfẹ́ owó àti ìgbádùn ti dipò ìfẹ́ ẹ̀kọ́, nitori eyi Ilé-àpèjẹ pọ ni ilú ju Ilé-ìkàwé lọ. Eyi ti ó burú jù ni pé, kò si Ilé-ìkàwé tuntun, eyi ti ó wà kò ri àtúnṣe. Ìròyìn gbe jade pé, Ilé-iṣẹ ẹ̀rọ ìbánisọ̀rọ̀ ti ṣe tán lati gbé Ilé-ìkàwé ti wọn kọ́ ni ọdún mẹwa sẹhin fún lilò ni ilé-iwé giga ti ó wà ni Àkokà, ilú Èkó, kúrò nitori wọn ti i pa lati ọdún marun lai lò. Eleyi yẹ kó ti ará ilú àti Òṣèlú lójú nitori, Ilé-ìkàwé ti wọn ti kọ́ ni ọgọrun ọdún sẹhin tàbi jù bẹ ẹ lọ ṣi wà ni Òkè-Òkun.
Ilú kò lè ni ìlọsíwájú lai si ẹ̀kọ́ àti ìmọ̀ nitori “Ìgbádùn tàbi Eré ṣi ṣe lai ṣi iṣẹ́, ló nfa Ìṣẹ́”.
ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Library as the name literarily suggested in Yoruba, is place where various kinds of books are kept, for Students and the public, where they can borrow books to read. The oldest Library started in Alexandria, Egypt in 300 BC. Nowadays, not only books are kept in the Library, Computers with internet are provided for those who want to read or carry out research on happenings around the world.
Educational Institution is incomplete without a Library. Libraries are not limited to Schools alone, because there are public Library in the Community or Neighbourhood and the Cities open to students and people who love knowledge. Schools have degenerated particularly public Schools, especially since the Federal Government takeover of Schools from Private Owners.
Yoruba people love education, but nowadays, love of money and pleasure has replaced the quest for knowledge, as a result there are now more Event Places than Library. The worst is that there are no new Libraries, and the existing ones lacked maintenance. According to the news, MTN (a major Mobile Phone Network Provider), is planning to relocate the Digital Library that was donated ten years ago, to University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, for lucking it up in the last five years. People and the Nigerian Government should be ashamed because Libraries built over hundred years are still in use in the Western World.
The Nation cannot progress without education and knowledge because “Seeking Pleasure or Play without work, leads to poverty”.
