The result of American election on Tuesday, November eight was announced on the night of eigth and ninth, year Twenty-sixteen. The three candidates vying for the top job as President were Hillary Clinton, the first woman to clinch the nomination of one of the two major parties (Democratic Party), Donald J. Trump, a Business mogul the nominee of the (Republican Party) and Gary Johnson, the nominee of (Libertarian Party).
The outcome of the American election sent a shock wave around the world as a result of the hateful speeches made during Donald Trump’s Presidential campaign. The hateful speeches was against women, promoted racism, against immigration, Muslim, etc. According to a saying in Yoruba, “If one is not invited by the person offering a sacrifice, intruding is not proper”. Africa as a continent was not an issue or mentioned during his campaign let alone Nigeria. Reactions from all parts of the world indicated that a higher moral standard was expected from the American Presidential candidate. America has practiced democracy, for two hundred and forty years, hence many expected them to elect a candidate who would have the spirit of togetherness and indwelling among her citizens and people all over the world.
An idiom in Yoruba, as translated by Oyekan Owomoyela (Yoruba Proverbs) said “If a person says there is no one like him/her, people of wisdom often maintain a contemplative silence”. As customary, since Donald Trump has been declared the President elect, world leaders had been writing or calling in to congratulate him. It is a pity that members of the Nigerian National Assembly, eagerly began to send in congratulatory messages ahead of President Muhammadu Buhari in breach of protocol. Instead of joining hands with President Muhammadu Buhari to promote “Anti-Corruption” and to find solution on the numerous problems such as the dearth of infrastructure caused by past mismanagement, the Nigerian media has gone frenzy on the American election outcome.
