ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Lagos was the capital of Nigeria for seventy seven years (1914 to 1991), but for thousands of years has been and still remains the nerve centre of commerce and trade. According to Yoruba adage “Who can identify the head of the wealthy in crowd? People from all over the world have been coming for trade and commerce in Lagos, parents of Alhaji Jakande were no exception as they left their community in Omu-Aran in present day Kwara State to trade without realizing that their gift of God, a baby boy, born on the twenty-third of July, 1929 would one day, become the first Executive Governor of Lagos State.
It is a gift of God for one to reach adulthood to the age of ninety years. It is not enough to live long but the use of one’s time, gift or talent and knowledge to serve others as Alhaji Jakande has used his political position to serve all Lagosian.
The Government of Alhaji Jakande established the following:
Lagos Radio and TV
Free education – Building of many schools to eliminate the three tier shift at Schools
Establishing the first State University – Lagos State University
Began Metro rail that was truncated by the Military Government
Building of General Hospitals in different zones of Lagos
Building of thousands of affordable housing estates etc.
The publisher and editorial team of The Yoruba Blog (an online publication) join the family, friends and all Lagosian to thank the Almighty for sparing Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande’s life.
