Iṣẹ́ ni oògùn ìṣẹ́ – Hard-work is a cure for poverty
Ẹ ṣe àyẹ̀wò ìwé akéwì-orin ni èdè Yorùbá ti àwọn ọmọ ilé-ìwé n kọ́ sórí ni ilé-ìwé ilẹ̀ Yorùbá ni ayé àtijọ:

ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Work is the antidote for poverty, work hard, my friend
Attaining higher height is largely dependent on hard work
If there is no one to depend on, we simply work harder
Your mother may be wealthy, your father may have a ranch of horses
If you depend on their wealth, you may end up in disgrace, I tell you
Gains not earned through hard work, may not last
Whatever is earned through hard work, often last in one’s hand
The arm is a relative, the elbow remain a sibling
The world may love you today, it is only when you are relevant that you will be loved tomorrow
Or when you are in a position of authority, the world will honour you with cheers
Wait till you are poor and you will see how all will grimace at you
Education do contribute to making one relevant, ensure you acquire solid education
And if you see people mocking education,
Please do not emulate them
Suffering is lying in wait for irresponsible children, sorrow lies ahead for truants
Do not waste your early years, my friend, work harder, time waits for no one.

Ìtàn fi yé wa wi pé Yorùbá ka ọ̀rọ̀ obinrin si ni àṣà Yorùbá bi ó ti ẹ jẹ wi pé obinrin ki jẹ Ọba nitori ni àṣà ilú, ọkunrin ló njẹ olóri. Obinrin kò pọ̀ ni ipò agbára. Àwọn ipò obinrin ni ‘Ìyáálé’, eyi jẹ́ iyàwó àgbà tàbi iyàwó àkọ́fẹ́ ninú ẹbí, pàtàki ni ilé o ni iyàwó púpọ̀ ṣùgbọ́n ọkùnrin ni ‘olóri ẹbí’. Obinrin Yorùbá ti ni àyè lati ṣe iṣẹ́ ti pẹ́, bi ó ti ẹ̀ jẹ́ wi pé àwọn iṣẹ́ obinrin bi oúnjẹ ṣí ṣe, ẹní hí hun, aṣọ hí hun, aró ṣi ṣe, òwú gbi gbọ̀n, ọjà ti tà (ẹ̀kọ́ ọrọ̀ ajé díẹ̀), oúnjẹ sí sè àti itọ́jú ẹbi ni obinrin nṣe. Àwọn ọkùnrin nṣe iṣẹ́ agbára bi iṣẹ́ ọdẹ, alágbẹ̀dẹ, àgbẹ̀ tàbi iṣẹ́ oko (iṣẹ́ fún ji jẹ àti mimu ẹbí). Obinrin ni ògúná gbongbo ni oníṣòwò òkèèrè, eyi jẹ ki obinrin lè ni ọrọ̀ àti lati lè gba oyè ‘Ìyálóde’. Fún àpẹrẹ, àwọn Ìyálóde ni ó njẹ Olóri ọjà ni gbogo ilẹ̀ Yorùbá àti alá-bójútó fún ọ̀rọ̀ obinrin.
Gẹ́gẹ́ bi àṣà ibilẹ̀ Yorùbá, àwọn ọkùnrin gbà ki iyàwó wọn ṣe iṣẹ́ lati ran ẹbí lọ́wọ́, eyi lè jẹ́ nitori àwọn ọkùnrin ni iyàwó púpọ̀, nitori èyi, kò nira bi iyàwó kan tàbi méji bá lọ ṣòwò ni òkèèrè, àwọn iyàwó yókù yio bójú tó ilé. Àṣà òkè-òkun fi fẹ́ iyàwó kan àti ẹ̀sìn òkèère ti Yorùbá gbà ló sọ àdìrò di ipò fún obinrin àti “Alá-bọ́dó, Ìyàwóilé tàbi Oníṣẹ́-ilé” ti ó di iṣẹ́ obinrin. Bi inú ọpọ ti ndùn, ni inú ẹlòmíràn mbàjẹ́ ni àsikò òjò. Yorùbá ni orin fún igbà ti kò ba si òjò, igbà ti òjò bá ṣẹ̀ṣẹ̀ bẹ̀rẹ̀ si rọ̀, tàbi ti ó bá nrọ̀ lọ́wọ́ àti bi òjò bá pọ̀jù. Ẹ gbọ́ àwọn orin wọnyi pàtàki bi àwọn ọmọ ilé-iwé alakọbẹrẹ ti nkọ orin òjò.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION
As many are happy, so are many sad during the raining season. Yoruba has various songs to depict, requesting for rain, or when the rain has just begun, or when the rain is affecting outdoor activities particularly for children or when the rain is too much. Listen to some of the songs for the rain that Primary School children often sing.

Ki oògùn Òyinbó tó gbòde, ewé àti egbòigi ti ó wà ni oko tàbi àyíká ilé ni Yorùbá fi nki àgbo lati dí àisàn lọ́wọ́ tàbi wo àisàn. Àwọn gbajúmọ̀ àti ọ̀dọ́ ayé òde òni ti kọ àgbo ti wọ́n fi ewé àti egbòigi ṣe fún oògùn àti iṣe Òyinbó.
Fún àkọsílẹ̀, Olùkọ̀wé èdè Yorùbá lóri ayélujára yi, yio bẹ̀rẹ̀ si ṣe àkọsílẹ̀ ewé àti egbòigi ti wọn fi ńto àgbo àti èyi ti ó wà fún itọ́jú ara. A ó bẹ̀rẹ̀ pẹ̀lú àgbo-ibà, nitori ibà ló wọ́pọ̀ jù ninú gbogbo oriṣiriṣi àrùn.
ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Most Yoruba elders above the age of fifty who grew up outside Lagos, were raised drinking herbal decoction or using herbs as preventive medicine or as curative. Up till today, some Yoruba herbal decoction are still very popular for the prevention or cure of pile or haemorrhoid known in Yoruba as “Jẹ̀dí/Jẹ̀díjẹ̀dí”.
Prior to Western medicine, Yoruba people relied on local herbs as preventive medicine and for curing the sick. There was a drift from exclusive reliant on herbal medicine for primary healthcare to Western medicine and lifestyle, hence the neglect of local herbs especially by the elites and the youths.
In order to preserve Yoruba traditional herbs, The Yoruba Blog and her team will begin to document online Yoruba local herbs and remedies. Publication will begin with Malaria which is the most common ailment.

A ṣe àkíyèsí pé wọn ti sọ iṣẹ́ ìyàwó-ilé di òwò nibi ìgbéyàwó ìbíl̀̀̀̀̀̀ẹ̀, pàtàki ni àwọn ilú nlá, nítorí èyí “ó ju alaga méjì tó ngbe inú ọkọ̀ bẹ ẹ. Wọn pè ìkan ni “Alaga Ìdúró” wọn pe ìkejì ni “Alaga Ijoko”. Gẹgẹbi àṣà ilẹ Yorùbá, kòsí bí “Ìyàwó ilé ti lè jẹ “Alaga” lórí ẹbí ọkọ tàbí ẹbí ìyàwó ti a ngbe. Ọkunrin ti o ti ṣe ìyàwó ti o yọri fún ọpọlọpọ ọdún, ti o si gbayí láwùjọ, yálà ni ìdílé ìyàwó tàbí ìdílé ọkọ ni a nfi si ipò “ALAGA” tàbí “OLÓRÍ ÀPÈJỌ.
Ìyàwó àgbà ni ìdílé ọkọ àti ti ìyàwó ni o ma nṣe aṣájú fún áwọn ìyàwó ilé yoku lati gbé tàbí gba igbá ìyàwó ni ibi ìgbéyàwó ìbílẹ. Ni ayé òde oni, a ṣe àkíyèsí wipé, ìdílé ìyàwó àti ọkọ, a san owó rẹpẹtẹ lati gba àwọn ti o yẹ ki a pè ni “Adarí Ètò Ijoko” fún ẹbi Ìyàwó àti “Adarí Ètò Ìdúró” fún ẹbi Ọkọ-ìyàwó”. Lẹhin ti àwọn obìnrin àjòjì yi ti gba owó iṣẹ́, wọn a sọ ara wọn di “Ọ̀GÁ”, wọn a ma pàṣe, wọn a ma ṣe bí ó ti wù wọn lati tún rí owó gbà lọ́wọ́ àwọn ẹbí mejeeji. Nípa ìwà yí, wọn a ma fi àkókò ṣòfò. Yorùbá ni “Alágbàtà tó nsọ ọjà di ọ̀wọ́n”.
“Ṣe bí wọn ti nṣe, ki o ba le ri bi o ṣe nri”, o yẹ ki á ti ọẃọ àṣàkasà yi bọlẹ̀. Ko ba àṣà mu lati sọ “Aṣojú awọn ìyàwó-Ilé” di “ALAGA”. Ipò méjèjì yàtọ sira, ó dẹ yẹ ki o dúró bẹ ẹ nítorí ọ̀gá méjì kò lè gbé inú ọkọ̀ kan.
ENGLISH TRANSLATION
It can easily be observed that Traditional marriages have turned largely commercial in nature and as a result of this there are more than two captains in such a ship. One is called “SEATING IN CHAIRMAN” while the second is called “STANDING IN CHAIRMAN”. In Yoruba culture, “a Housewife” cannot be made the CHAIRMAN over her husband’s family in either the Bride or the Groom’s Family. “ABD”, ìbẹ̀rẹ̀ iwé kikà ni èdè Yorùbá – Yoruba Alphabets “ABD” is the beginning of Yoruba education.
Bi ọmọdé bá bẹrẹ ilé-iwé alakọbẹrẹ, èdè Yorùbá ni wọn fi nkọ ọmọ ni ilé-iwé lati iwé kini dé iwé kẹta. Ìbẹ̀rẹ̀ àti mọ̃ kọ, mọ̃ ka ni èdè Yorùbá bẹ̀rẹ̀ pẹ̀lú ki kọ àti pipe ABD. Ẹ ṣe àyẹ̀wò kikọ àti kikà ABD pẹ̀lú àwòrán ni ojú iwé yi.
ENGLISH TRANSLATION
When children are enrolled for primary education, they are taught in Yoruba language from Primary one to three. Àìní ìtẹ́lọ́rùn ló bí gbogbo ìwà burúkú bi: irọ́ pípa, olè jíjà, àgbèrè, ojúkòkòrò àti bẹ̃bẹ lọ.
Àìní ìtẹ́lọ́rùn ló wà ni ìdí àwọn Oṣèlú àti Olórí Ìjọ ti o nlo owó ìlú tàbi owó ìjọ fún ara wọn dipò ki wọn lõ fún ìlú àti ìjọ. Ọ̀pọ̀lọpọ̀ Òṣèlú̀ ilẹ̀ Nigeria á fi ọ̀nà ẹ̀rú wá ipò nítorí àti kó owó ìlú jẹ, wọn ki wúlò fún ìlú ṣùgbọ́n fún ara wọn. ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Lack of contentment is the root cause of bad character like: lying, prostitution, covetousness etc.
Lack of contentment is behind the source of Politicians and Church Leaders embezzling public fund and congregation’s tithes and offering for their own personal use. Many Nigerian Politicians would use every crooked means to be elected to any position in politics in order to be in a position to have access to public fund and afterward, they are often useless to their electorate but for themselves. The most pitiable thing is that they steal the money and things they will never need to their dying day as well as storing up what they think their children would never be able to finish.
The worst side of lack of contentment in our country, there is no difference between the Church Leaders who are supposed to be preaching about the reward of contentment to the Politicians, the people and fraudsters. It is unfortunate that many Church Leaders are more covetous than Politicians, Church Congregants and Fraudsters, as a result of competing for position and mundane things.
The Country will be better off if the Yoruba adage that said “Contentment is the Father of Character” can be applied.
