Igbéyàwó ibilẹ̀ – Traditional marriage
Ni ayé àtijọ́, wọn ma ńfi obinrin fún ọkọ ni, ṣùgbọ́n ni ayé òde òni, obinrin á mú̀ àfẹ́sọ́nà lati fi hàn òbi, nitori Yorùbá gba ọmọ obinrin ni àyè lati lọ si ilé-iwé, tàbi kọ́ iṣẹ́-ọwọ́, àti lati ṣe òwò. Èyi jẹ ki obinrin kúrò lọ́dọ̀ obi wọn. Bi obinrin bá ti dàgbà tó bi ọdún meji-din-logun, ti ó tó wọ ilé-ọkọ, àwọn òbi yio ma ran léti pé, ó ti tó mú ọkọ wálé.
Ẹni ti obinrin mọ̀ pé òhun kò lè fẹ́, bi àfojúdi ni lati fi irú ọkùnrin bẹ̃ han òbi. Bi obinrin ti ó ti dàgbà tó lati wọ ilé ọkọ bá mú àfẹ́sọ́nà wá han òbi, wọn yio fi òwe Yorùbá ti ó ni “A ki mọ́ ọkọ ọmọ, ki a tún mọ àlè rẹ” ṣe iwadi pé, ṣe ó da lójú pé òhun yio fẹ ọkùnrin ti ó mú wá? Òwe yi tún wúlò lati fi ṣe ikilọ nigbà igbéyàwó ibilẹ̀ fún obinrin pé kò lè mú ọkùnrin miràn wá lẹhin igbéyàwó.
ENGLISH TRANSLATION
In time past, ladies are given out in marriage, but in modern times, ladies bring home their fiancée to introduce to their parents, because Yoruba permits girl child to attend school or learn a trade and engage in trading. This permits girls to leave home. When a girl child is old enough for marriage, up to eighteen years, parents would begin to remind her of the need to bring home a suitor.
It is impertinent to introduce a male friend without any serious commitment to parents. If a girl that is old enough to marry, brings home a fiancée to introduce to her parents, the Yoruba proverb that said “One does not acknowledge one’s child husband and also acknowledge her illicit affair” is used to advice against bringing any other suitor. This proverb, is used also, as part of instruction to the bride during traditional marriage against illicit lovers/affairs.
