English translation:
It is now well over 30 years that Nigerians have been suffering from the ills of power outages and its attendant use of power generators. Due to on and off power provided by the authorities, the use of power generators — which can be compared to a dangerous insect ingested by a neighbor, is all too common.
As the old Yoruba proverb literally translated goes: “if your neighbor is about to swallow a dangerous insect and you choose to ignore him, expect his heavy breathing caused by the dangerous insect to prevent you from sleeping late at night”. This saying applies to the widespread use of noisy power generators in Nigeria — almost especially Lagos. With all the money spent on generating power in Nigeria, the dangerous insect of reliance on small power generators has been swallowed. And the late night loud breathing has followed in the form of loud noises from neighbors generators. Noise so great, that sleep becomes indeed a battle for the unaccustomed. The noise is all day and all night, but worst of all at night.
But power need not only be generated using petrol or diesel. We can use solar energy, wind or recycled waste products — which we seem to have in abundance i.e. waste products, to generate power.
It is a thing of shame that for over 30 years it has proved impossible for the leaders and people of this great country to prevent this neighbor that has ingested the dangerous insect of dependence on power generators as a primary source of power from continuing in the same ways.
